Quick answer
US Airline Baggage Fees 2026: the practical verdict
A checked bag can add $90 to a round trip even when the quoted fee is $45. For two standard checked bags at $45 and $55 each way, budget $200 per person for the round trip. Compare the fare plus bags in both directions, then apply the allowances attached to your ticket.
This is a comparison of published airline rules checked October 28, 2026. The fixed-price examples below have specific fare and route conditions; they are not a quote for every itinerary. Where a current price was not verified, we link to the airline instead of publishing an estimated fee.
US airline checked bag fees: published examples
Amounts below are USD per person, each direction, for standard-size bags within the relevant weight allowance, without a fee waiver. Extra weight, oversize baggage, taxes and special items can change the total. Ticket issue or change dates also matter.
| Airline / fare scope | First checked bag | Second checked bag | Conditions and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Main Cabin: within / between the U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands | $45 online / $50 airport | $55 online / $60 airport | Current schedule for tickets issued on or after April 9, 2026; Basic Economy adds $5 per bag for tickets issued on or after May 18, 2026. American fee table. |
| Delta Main / Comfort: domestic U.S. | $45 | $55 | Standard bags under 50 lb; status, eligible cards and military exceptions can change the allowance. Earlier tickets may use different fees. Delta fees and estimator. |
| Southwest Basic / Choice / Choice Preferred: U.S. mainland | $45 | $55 | Booked, ticketed and/or changed on or after April 9, 2026. Choice Extra and qualifying benefits can include bags. Southwest fee schedule. |
| United | Use itinerary calculator | Use itinerary calculator | Enter route, dates, cabin and status; a prepaid discount may apply. A universal current fee is not verified here. |
| Alaska | Check airline quote | Check airline quote | Alaska baggage policies; confirm your route and fare benefits. |
| JetBlue | Check airline quote | Check airline quote | JetBlue baggage information; a current numeric quote is not verified here. |
| Spirit | Check booking quote | Check booking quote | Spirit booking; check the selected fare and included bags before comparing add-ons. |
| Frontier | Use Bag Price Checker | Use Bag Price Checker | Frontier bag prices; dates, purchase stage and bundle can change the cost. |
Read a fare-specific rule before assuming that an old $35 price or a “free bags” headline applies to your booking. For American’s example above, two Main Cabin bags paid online cost $100 each way; the airport total is $110 each way.
How much do baggage fees add to a round trip?
Trip cost = airfare + outbound bag charges + return bag charges. Work this out per traveler. Do not multiply a one-way bag quote by the number of nights or assume every traveler needs the same number of bags.
| Packing plan | Each direction | Round trip per person |
|---|---|---|
| One standard checked bag | $45 | $90 |
| Two standard checked bags | $45 + $55 = $100 | $200 |
| Two travelers, one checked bag each | $90 for the pair | $180 for the pair |
Illustrative comparison: a $180 return fare plus $90 for one bag totals $270. A $240 return fare with that same bag included totals $240. The second flight is $30 cheaper overall under those assumptions. These are arithmetic examples, not live fares.
For a family, assign the bags first. Two shared checked cases can have a different cost from every person checking two cases. Compare suitcase sizes and decide whether a set is useful before adding luggage you will not use.
Carry-on versus checked bag fees: compare the allowance
A personal item, an overhead carry-on and a checked case are separate allowances. A suitcase fitting the dimensions does not establish that overhead carriage is included in your fare.
Delta’s domestic fee page includes one carry-on and one personal item with the example above. Southwest also lists a carry-on and personal item at no charge in its fare table. American publishes one of each subject to its size requirements. Frontier includes a personal item in the fare and quotes carry-on prices separately; bundles can include more.
Check the exact ticket for other carriers and Basic Economy restrictions. Avoid a blanket claim that every low fare includes a roller bag, or that checking a bag is always cheaper than carrying it on.
Compare airline carry-on requirements, then measure the packed bag including wheels and handles. For a model-specific sizing example, see the Samsonite Omni PC review.
Before paying airline baggage fees
- Open the actual booking: record operating airline, fare, ticket issue date and any included bags.
- Apply benefits carefully: check eligible travelers and reservation requirements for status, card or cabin benefits.
- Weigh and measure each bag: use the appropriate limit for that fare and route.
- Compare payment stages: a prepaid discount or bundle may help, but compare its full cost with buying only the bags you need.
- Check both directions: return packing, airline or routing can differ. Save the quote and receipt.

US airline baggage fee questions
Are baggage fees charged each way?
The published examples above are per direction. If you bring the same bags on the return flight under the same conditions, add the fee again.
Which airline has the cheapest baggage fees?
There is no single winner for every ticket. Compare total fare plus the bags you need, including route, purchase timing, bundle and eligible waivers.
How much are two checked bags on a round trip?
At $45 for the first and $55 for the second each way, the total is $200 per person. Use your itinerary’s actual fees if they differ.
Does buying a carry-on suitcase avoid bag fees?
Only if the packed bag meets the flight’s requirements and your fare includes that allowance. A product’s carry-on label does not establish either condition.
